How to embrace failure

Failure is not the opposite of success – it’s part of the journey and how we become better versions of ourselves

Failure is a natural part of life, but based on what we see on social media, it may not look it as people tend to post the palatable part of their lives. I’m here to remind you that we all experience setbacks and disappointments at some point in our lives. However, it’s important to remember that failure is not the end of the road. In fact, failure can be an opportunity for growth and learning. Here are some tips on how to use failure to your advantage:

First, it’s important to acknowledge and accept your failures. It’s okay to feel disappointed or upset when things don’t go as planned. However, it’s essential not to dwell on those feelings for too long. Instead, try to shift your focus to what you can learn from the experience.

Clinical psychologist and anti-apartheid activist Dr Saths Cooper says, “Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the journey. It’s how we learn, how we grow, and how we become better versions of ourselves.”

Cooper’s words highlight the importance of failure in personal growth and development. Rather than viewing failure as a negative outcome, he emphasizes that it’s an essential part of the process towards success. By learning from our mistakes and failures, we can become more resilient individuals.

Another way to embrace failure is to view it as an opportunity for feedback. Ask for feedback from others, including friends, family, or fellow students. Listen carefully to their feedback and use it to improve and grow, and remember that it’s not personal. Don’t take it as a reflection of your self-worth or abilities.

It’s essential to persevere through failure. Don’t give up on your goals, and grant yourself grace and patience as you try different ways to pursue your goals. All experiences have value, even if it’s not the outcome you wanted or planned for.
