Most South Africans, mainly the youth, are hardly affected by the jobs purge that has been triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic economic decline. It is clear and evident that we are about to experience a significant amount of economic decline, which had been recognized by reports since the beginning of the hard lockdowns as well as reflected by gross domestic product (GDP) in conjunction with monthly indicators such as a rise in unemployment.
“It’s mainly people from the age of sixteen (voting age) to 35 years old, who are facing multiple shocks from the Covid-19 crisis, which could lead to this generation being labelled as the ‘world penury lockdown generation’,” said Zinhle Rapule from Western TVET College.
Globally, youth employment is dependent on the most important sectors, which include, manufacturing, entertainment (creatives), hospitality (which is the main player to tourism), and on the informal economy. Before the pandemic, more than four in 10 young workers globally were working in the four sectors that are most adversely affected by the crisis. And almost three-quarters of those young people (131 million) were informally employed.
